PROGRAM NOTES
Mornings can feel like a cruel joke—when the world greets the day with fanfare and energy, you're still horizontal, staring at the ceiling, negotiating your will to live with your alarm clock. The brass blare, the rhythms bustle, and yet, you're groggy, irritable, and barely human.
AWAKE! captures that disorienting clash between the world’s vibrant momentum and your slow rise into consciousness. The piece begins with bold, celebratory gestures—brash and unrelenting—contrasted by moments of sluggish resistance. As the narrative unfolds, you find yourself in line at the coffee shop. Your name is called (badly misspelled, of course). You sip. And suddenly—everything changes. The caffeine kicks in. Focus sharpens. Energy aligns. The music lifts, and at last, you are gloriously, dramatically...awake.
Both a humorous homage to morning rituals and a showcase of brass brilliance, AWAKE! is a fanfare for the sleep-deprived and coffee-dependent among us
AWAKE! was selected as a finalist by the Dallas Winds for their 2020-2021 Fanfare Competition and world premiered by the Dallas Winds.
